The kiln prices include the recommended shelf kit, and the legally-necessary lid or door safety switch where appropriate.

The smaller kilns are usually in stock, ready for next-day delivery to your address. The larger kilns are made to order, take about ten working days to build, and will arrive in a crate or on a palette.

Paragon in the US doesn't have a warehouse full of ready-to-go kilns, and it's not feasible to showcase the extensive range at the Cherry Heaven shop in the UK, especially as most kilns are protectively packed for shipping.

Kilns regularly leave the US factory for Cherry Heaven using reserved air cargo to minimise the freight charges. Air cargo typically takes four days. Distributors or resellers who use sea freight often secure advance payments then wait to collect enough orders to fill a container. Sea freight can take seven weeks: or longer.

Kilns made outside the UK have been re-engineered to work on a single-phase 230V-240V mains supply. They've been comprehensively tested to meet the demanding UL 499 standard in the US and CE standard in the EU.

UK voltage used to be 240V and European used to be 220V. The EU decided to harmonise the voltage to 230V, but the implementation costs were too high for almost no real benefit. So, to appear harmonised, the legal voltage limits were changed to 230V, but within the range 216V-253V. Generally, in the UK, 240V is a reliable average.

The elements in ceramic-fibre kilns are safely embedded in the fibre. The elements in firebrick kilns are turned off by a legally-necessary lid or door safety switch. However, never get careless: kilns are very hot and connected to the mains.

It'll be too late to think about safety practices and equipment after an accident. Apart from kiln accessories, the on-line shop includes heat resistant ceramic blocks and cloths, digital reminder-timers, fire extinguishers, heat-resistant gloves, and glare-resistant glasses.

It's important to have your fire extinguisher near your kiln. Read the instructions as soon as you unpack it, learn how to treat burns, buy a basic first aid kit, and fit a smoke alarm.

For private home use, check your building and contents insurance for relevant exclusions. For business use, you'll need public liability insurance and will have to comply with health and safety regulations.

Businesses and course providers might have to get change-of-use planning consent for proposed building changes and provide staff training, safety glasses, fire extinguishers, first-aid materials, disabled access, a bathroom, and fire exits.

US-made firebrick kilns have live heating elements that are exposed whenever the door or lid is open. To comply with EU safety regulations, EU kilns have a hinged door or lid with an integral switch that is fitted to turn off the elements as soon as the kiln is opened: an important safety feature included in the price. Exposed live elements are very dangerous, and illegal in the UK.

Nearly every kiln has a recommended furniture kit, an appropriate mix of shelves and shelf posts, included in the price. Extra shelf kits allow you to stack your work, optimising your use of the firing chamber volume, and your time.

It's very important to understand what the shelf kit consists of, why you might need a different one, and why you might need more than one. If you're not sure, go back and read more before completing your order,

The shop prices are for shelf kits ordered with your kiln. Extra kits, ordered and delivered separately, may be heavy and need special protective packing: so mail or call first to check if there will be an extra delivery charge.

All new kilns are guaranteed for 12 months, and user-fitted spare parts for 90 days. In the very unlikely event of a fault, find your invoice or other proof of purchase and call: even if you bought the kiln from a reseller.

It's vital to provide a clear delivery address and an appropriate telephone number, and to be there to receive your kiln. If you're not there, freight companies will leave a card: if you ignore the card, the kiln will eventually be returned to us and there'll be a re-delivery charge.

If you have to be out, leave a signed note on your door asking the delivery driver to leave the kiln with someone nearby who'll sign for it and keep it indoors for you.

Larger kilns come in a crate, in a large box, or on a palette. Delivery drivers are not allowed to lift very heavy goods on their own, so make sure that someone can help.

All kilns come with the correct interior furniture: checked before delivery. So take care not to discard shelves, posts, or fibre cloths, with the packaging.
